Animate your 3D models with Minko

Minko is file format independent. Actually, it doesn’t include any file format parser by default to keep the library as small as possible. But the engine would be quite useless without them. We provide extensions to load such files. Here is a demo of our Collada loader.

Minko French forum launched on Mediabox

Open source is all about the community. And a community needs a place to gather and exchange. This is why we are launching a forum dedicated to Minko on Mediabox. Mediabox is the number one French community platform dedicated to the Adobe Flash Platform. This is why we are very proud to have an official forum there!

Of course, this is just a first step and we will soon unveil other community tools for all our friends around the world. Stay tuned!

Minko released as open source

I’m glad to announce the very first public release of Minko, Aerys’ 3D framework targeting the Adobe Flash platform and the new Stage3D API. This release focuses on setting up the main concepts and APIs. You can download Minko on the Aerys Developer Hub. The code is realeased under the LGPL license so everyone is free to start building awesome 3D applications for the web. Here are the key features:

  • Extensible Scene Graph API
  • ActionScript 3.0 GPU programming
  • Extensions system
  • Support for 3DS and Collada file formats
  • Dynamic lighting and dynamic shadows
  • Hardware accelerated animations
  • 3D physics

Yes… with Minko you can now create “shaders” and program the graphics hardware using ActionScript 3.0 code! Thanks to this awesome feature, any Flash developer can now program the GPU to create incredible hardware accelerated rendering effects. We have also released a bunch of tutorials, technical articles and open source demonstrations such as:

Those demos take advatange of the many extensions already available. Those extensions are separated projects providing extra features such as:

Anyone can create extensions and share them with the community. Thanks to the LGPL license, you can also create proprietary extensions and sell them. You can expect more extensions and a 1.5 version to be released before the end of the year. A lot of documentation will also be pushed every month.

NAO AS3 API released as open source, a Flasher attempt to build Skynet

Programming an actual robot is most developers wildest dream. Most of the time, you have to deal with very low level programming and portability issues. But not anymore. Not anymore because today we are very proud to release the “NAO AS3 API” as an open source project. Thanks to this little API, you can now build Adobe Flash applications that will interact and command NAO, the robot created by Aldebaran Robotics.

Meet us at “Adobe – Back From MAX” in Paris and London

I’m glad to announce Aerys will be at “Back From MAX” in Paris and London. But we won’t just attend the event. We will also give a fully featured presentation. In fact, I’m very honored to be the only guest as all other speakers are Adobe evangelists! Here is the topic of my presentation:

Programming 3D applications for the web

The new Stage3D API offers incredible new possibilities. But it also comes with great challenges: accessibility, performances, user experience… In this session, you’ll discover how to address those problematics and create amazing and seamless 3D experiences for the web.

I will of course talk about all the secret work my team and I have been working on. More details about the “Back From MAX” events on the official websites:

Minko, Orbit and Kinect team up to make you feel like a Jedi

The video features a school project created by EPITA students. It uses Microsoft Kinect and a Flash application to navigate through a social network in 3D. The 3D is done with Minko and the Kinect/Flash communication uses Orbit. We helped the team to get started and they gave us a very positive feedback:

Most Kinect libraries spend too much time reading and sending data we don’t need. Thanks to Orbit, it was easy to build a dedicated light and fast protocol to transport only the required Kinect data. Plus it works seamlessly with the rest of the code and fits in the classic Flash events workflow.

says Panos Baroudjian, project manager.

The social network data is read from the “Chatter” REST API provided by Salesforce who is also sponsoring the project. Despite the fact 3D it not really useful here it still looks cool, especially the Tron-like glow effect.

Google Globe ported to Flash

The Google Globe is a 3D data visualization Chrome Experiment. We decided to port it to Flash to see how hard it might be and how it would perform. We were genuinly surprised to see that Flash offered better performances an all the configurations we tested. Here is a short video of our Flash port:
